Working-Foxhills, Great Britain - After sitting her freshman year as a member of the Florida State women’s tennis team, Daneika Borthwick is taking strides on the court as she earned a berth in the quarterfinals of the main draw at the AEGON GB Pro-Series Foxhills this week in Great Britain.

“I'm so happy for Daneika and the great summer she has had thus far,” head coach Jennifer Hyde said. “She had to sit out all of last season, which was hugely frustrating for her at times, and she focused solely on her training for months. Now, she is seeing the result from all of her hard work, earning some significant wins against top 300 and 400 world ranked opponents.”

In the rounds of 32, Borthwick defeated Chiaki Okadale from Japan 6-1, 6-4. She followed that outing with another commanding performance against Isabella Shinkova of Bulgaria, 7-6 (5), 6-3. Both of those wins for the Aspatria native were over players ranked inside the top 500 in the world. Before the tournament, Borthwick was listed outside of the top 1,000 however with those two victories; she will most likely top her highest ranking of 933.

“I’m really pleased with two back to back wins against two very experienced players, and hope to take this form into my next match,” Borthwick said. “I’ve had a really good year training at Florida State, where it’s great to train all year round outdoors in the sun.”
Although Borthwick was one of three Great Britain natives to reach the final eight, she dropped her quarterfinal match to Sarah Gronet of Germany 6-2, 6-1.

“I know when she comes back to FSU in the fall, she wants to take full advantage of the endless opportunities she will have during our fall season. She will have matches against many top ranked players, opportunities to set herself up for the crucial spring season. The future looks very bright for Daneika, and I'm so excited for her and all of the success she has had back home in the UK this summer.”
