Athens, GA - The Georgia men’s tennis team was tripped up on the final day of play at the 2012 Southern Intercollegiate Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Monday morning – the 45th annual event featuring the best college players from around the region.

Junior Hernus Pieters fell just short as he sought his third Southern Intercollegiate title, dropping his Division I singles championship match 6-4, 6-0 to Ole Miss’ Jonas Lutjen. Pieters had reached today’s final with a solid outing Sunday as he defeated Georgia Tech’s Juan Spir in the quarterfinals and Virginia Tech’s Andreas Bjerrehus in the semis.

Pieters won the Division II singles title as well as the Division I doubles title in 2010 as a freshman.

Also on Monday morning the Bulldog doubles team of sophomore Nathan Pasha and freshman Ben Wagland were defeated by an 8-4 score by Clemson’s team of Dominique and Yannick Maden in the Division I semifinals.

“I’m sure the guys are disappointed,” said head coach Manuel Diaz. “We played some great tennis this weekend, especially Hernus. I thought he did well today up until it was 4-4, 40-15, and both players were extremely tired. I felt like he was doing well and then double faulted a couple times in a row and played a loose point after that, and Jonas capitalized. He was just a little better in the big points today.”

“We can learn a lot from this tournament and the players about themselves,” Diaz said. “We definitely have some talent – we’ve got to get our freshman to continue to mature. They need to be tougher against the tough competition, and I think now they realize how fast our league and our region is, and know what to expect. We need to keep our emotions under control and keep our poise in the big moments, because that was the difference.”

Georgia is next in action Sept. 21-23 at the Napa Valley Tennis Classic in Napa, Calif.
