Athens, GA - The 15th-ranked Georgia women’s tennis team blanked Memphis 7-0 to open the 2011 season Friday at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Courts.
Georgia (1-0) grabbed a 1-0 lead after claiming the doubles point over the Lady Tigers (0-1). The No. 3 Bulldog team of Alexandra Anghelescu and Cameron Ellis, ranked 40th nationally, were first off the court following an 8-1 win over Kelly Gray and Kathleen Hawkins. They improved to 7-2 on the year. Then, the No. 1 team of Kate Fuller and Chelsey Gullickson clinched the doubles point with an 8-2 victory over Stefanie Mikesz and Mariya Slupska. Georgia completed a sweep when the No. 2 freshmen duo of Lilly Kimbell and Maho Kowase routed Andrea Arques-Garcia and Courtney Collins 8-2. The Kimbell-Kowase tandem is riding an eight-match winning streak. They are 8-1 this season.
The Bulldogs took a 2-0 advantage when junior Nadja Gilchrist registered a 6-1,6-1 win over Gray at No. 4 singles. Georgia went up 3-0 following Kowase’s 6-4,6-1 victory over Slupksa at No. 2. Kowase, ranked 97th, leads the squad with a 17-5 record. Georgia clinched the win when Anghelescu posted a 6-2,7-5 victory over Mikesz at No. 3. Kimbell, ranked 95th, blanked Arques-Garcia 6-0,6-0 to make it 5-0. Gullickson rallied past Collins in the feature match at No. 1, 3-6,7-5,6-3 for a 6-0 lead. Ellis, ranked 58th, made it a shutout with her 6-2,6-0 decision over Hawkins.
“It was a pretty good first match for us, I thought we played solid doubles,” said Georgia coach Jeff Wallace. “Memphis pressed us in the top of the singles lineup, and I thought we rolled at the four, five and six spots. We focused on winning the doubles to get that first point, and they did a good job. I’m continued to be impressed with how well our number two and three teams are playing. Chelsey and Kate are a new team and they did a good job at number one. We know it’s a long season and the most important thing is to keep working hard and get better each day.”
The Bulldogs now are 3-0 all-time against the Lady Tigers. They opened up the 2009 season with a 7-0 home win over Memphis too.
Georgia returns to action next Saturday, Jan. 29 when it travels to Chapel Hill, N.C. for an ITA Kickoff Weekend event. The Bulldogs will face Virginia Commonwealth at 2 p.m. The following day, they will battle either host North Carolina or Depaul.
