Tulsa, OK - Junior Sadio Doumbia used a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Joey Burkhardt of North Carolina Tuesday morning to move on in the qualifying draw of the ITA/D’Novo All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
Doumbia will meet Grant Ive from host Tulsa tomorrow in the third and final round of the qualifier, set to go at 10 a.m. ET. Ive today defeated Nebraska’s Christopher Aumeuller, 6-4, 6-2. With a win tomorrow, Doumbia would join teammate Javier Garrapiz in main draw action beginning Thursday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
“Sadio played great today,” said associate head coach Will Glenn. “He is making the necessary adjustments and did what we had to do in the second set to get it done. He will have a lot of crowd noise playing a guy from Tulsa tomorrow but he is up for the challenge.”
Georgia had two teams in action today in the qualifying doubles. Doumbia teamed up with Wil Spencer to defeat Purdue’s Aaron Dujovne and Mark Kovacks by an 8-5 score to reach the second round, but dropped that match, 8-2, to the overall No. 1 seed in TCU’s Emanuel Brighiu and Chris Price. Sixth-seeded Garrapiz and Drake Bernstein clawed their way back from down two breaks but fell to Ohio State’s Matt Allare and Shuhei Uzawa, 8-6, in the first round.
In consolation singles, Spencer defeated Tommy Laine from the University of Maryland in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Bernstein took BYU’s Evan Urbina to three sets after dropping the first to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-0.
