Gainesville, FL - In just the first tournament of the spring, the No. 20 Florida State men’s golf team finished strong in second place at the Gator Invitational as sophomore Hank Lebioda finished tied for first. The Seminoles finished the tournament with a 15-over 855, six strokes behind first place Arkansas at the Mark Bostick Golf Course.
“I am really proud of the way Hank led the team this week,” said head coach Trey Jones. “Tying for first should give him some confidence going forward. While we have a lot of maturing to do we are starting to show signs of a competitive team.”
Florida State had its best round of the tournament with a 1-under 279 to move up one spot on the leaderboard. It also marks the best round of the school year for the team.
Lebioda posted a weekend best of a 3-under 67 to have his best collegiate finish with a 4-under 206. He had three birdies on the day to catch up to first place Trey Rule of Mercer. On the final hole of the day, Lebioda had the lead, but Rule made birdie to force a playoff.
After both made par on the first hole, Lebioda hit the ball in the water on hole two while Rule birdied to take the individual medalist honors.
“I’m really proud of how I handled myself the past two days,” said Lebioda. “By no means did I have my best stuff, yet I was still able to go out, grind and have a great tournament. Since my first day at Florida State, coach Jones has prepared me for a time like this, and to see it start to pay off is a really cool feeling.”
Freshman Jack Maguire moved up seven positions during the day to finish tied for eighth with a 3-over 213. In the third round, he posted a 2-under 68. After making a bogey and double bogey on the eight hole on Saturday, less wind allowed for a more comfortable club selection and then drilled a 20 foot putt to make birdie. He finished the front nine with three birdies Sunday.
Freshman Cristobal Del Solar and sophomore Rowin Caron both made 2-over 72s Sunday to go towards the team score. Del Solar finished the tournament with a 7-over 217 to tie for 18th place while Caron finished tied for 25th with a 9-over 219.
Playing as an individual, freshman Harry Ellis finished his first collegiate tournament tied for 30th with a 10-over 220. Freshman Josh Lee finished the tournament tied for 56th.
The team travels to Dade City, Fla., to play in the USF Invitational March 2nd-4th. Check back to Seminoles.com for all your information on the golf team and follow the team at twitter.com/fsugolf.
