Mt. Pleasant, SC - The fourth-ranked Florida State sand volleyball team picked up its eighth and ninth consecutive dual match victories on Sunday morning at the CofC Sand Classic hosted by the College of Charleston at the sand courts at Creekside.
The Seminoles captured their fourth win over a ranked team in the day’s first match, defeating No. 8 Georgia State, 4-1, before taking down host College of Charleston, 5-0.
In the process, Florida State improved its record to 14-1 on the season as the Noles continue to prove they are the most dominant team in the East Region less than a month away from the AVCA National Championships.
“The East is picking up its level of play and we were definitely challenged this weekend,” FSU head coach Danalee Corso said. “This is good. We like to be challenged. We still have a lot we can improve on and we are going to continue to press on and keep working hard.”
Senior All-American Aurora Davis and junior All-American Jace Pardon cruised to a pair of sweeps against Georgia State and College of Charleston’s top tandems on Court 1, while sisters junior Stephanie Pellitteri and sophomore Kristina Pellitteri did the same on Court 2 also handedly picking up consecutive set victories against the Panthers and Cougars.
Arguably the top performance of the day came on Court 3, however, where the duo of junior All-American Sarah Wickstrom and senior Fatma Yildirim grabbed two victories including an epic three-set win over Georgia State’s Sarah Agnew and Katelyn Rawls, 21-18, 33-35, 15-13. The veteran pair rebounded from the taxing second set loss to secure the back-and-forth third set.
“That was an unreal match and it was awesome to see Sarah and Fatma battle back with that kind of pressure on them,” Corso said. “We can’t recreate that kind of pressure in practice so it was a great win. Sarah is getting back to her All-America level from last year and today’s match really helped bring out the best in both of them.”
Wickstrom and Yildirm remain undefeated at 10-0 this season.
In addition, junior Melanie Pavels and sophomore Julie Brown routed their Georgia State and College of Charleston opponents on Court 4 and freshmen Sierra Sanchez and Hailey Luke came from behind to defeat Cougar pair Kari Fidelholtz and Catey Warren 19-21, 21-18, 15-13 on Court 5.
Sophomore Annie Montgomery and freshman Julia Thompson competed on Court 5 against Georgia State but fell to Alexis Townsend and Delaney Rohan 21-17, 21-12.
The Seminoles return to action next weekend at the three-day Fiesta on Siesta Key event.
