“Even in the Pre-Qualifying draws, this tournament is deep,” head coach Jennifer Hyde said. “It’s going to be unbelievably intense. The best players in the country are invited to this and I am excited that we have five ladies representing Florida State. “
Saturday’s tennis will feature all five players as sophomores Mia Vriens, Daneika Borthwick and Leyla Erkan will compete in pre- qualifying singles starting at 11:30 a.m. PT. Vriens will face Caroline Magnusson of Tulane while Borthwick will take on the No. 4 seed in the draw in Chanelle Van Nguyen of UCLA. The top four singles and doubles finishers will advance to the Qualifying Draw which is set to begin on Oct. 2 and run through Oct. 3. Segarelli has earned her spot in Qualifying singles and will play her first matches in those rounds with hopes of qualifying for the Main Draw, which is slated for Oct.4-7.
“I want the girls to recognize that we are one of the best teams in the country,” Hyde said. “We belong out there. Playing against the best players in the nation is going to make us better and there are going to be great opportunities to compete and put it on the line at this event. It’s a big deal and it speaks a lot about our team and what we’re going to be capable of doing this spring.”
