FSU Spring Practice Opens, Noles Still Motivated

Tallahassee - With the sound of each horn, the players shift from one drill to the next, orders being barked in every direction. There's no hesitation from any of the Florida State players, even on day one of spring practice. Not even from two-sport star Jameis Winston, who, like last season, is rotating between football and baseball. But this is what he expects.

"We want to redeem ourselves and keep the crystal ball or whatever trophy it is in Tallahassee. And that's the most important thing," he said.

The Heisman Trophy winner is undoubtedly the number one quarterback in camp. But he says Sean Maguire and John Franklin III force him to play better.

"Sean's good enough to know that I know that I'm gonna get keep getting pushed," Winston said. "And I promise you Coach Fisher ain't gonna let me become complacent."

Which is Head Coach Jimbo Fisher's mentality this spring: There's no complacency. And he made that clear after the first day.

"Got a long way to go," Fisher said. "But as typical as where you would be at this time. But not disappointed at all and I thought it was a pretty good first practice."

"We're definitely hungry," said Mario Edwards, Jr., a junior defensive end. "We lost some players but that makes us even more hungry because we're gonna fight and show people that we still have depth."

Fisher was asked about replacing Kelvin Benjamin's size. He joked that all he'll have to do is put Bobo Wilson on top of Kermit Whitfield and that should equal one Benjamin.

While filling the holes at receiver remains one question, there are always question marks entering the spring. At least this group of Seminoles is still interested in finding the answers.
