Tallahassee, FL -- April 23, 2012 --
Florida State University and the Seminole Soccer program announced on Monday, April 23 the schedule for the 2012 season. The Seminoles will open the season with three straight road matches before finally returning to Tallahassee for their home opener against intra-state rival Florida on Friday, August 31.
“The goal every year is to compete for a national championship and we feel that we have put together a very challenging schedule with some early tests on the road that will help prepare our team both physically and mentally,” said head coach Mark Krikorian.
Over the last decade, the Florida State soccer program has ranked among the nation’s best and 2012 won’t be any different as the Seminoles will look to defend their ACC title and make a return trip to the College Cup.
With Krikorian back for his eighth season in Tallahassee and seven returning starters from a squad that finished ranked No. 3 in the nation last year, the quest for that first national championship begins Friday, August 17 in Minnesota against the Golden Gophers.
Twelve teams on this year's schedule recorded 10 or more wins a season ago. Eleven schools earned a bid to participate in the 2011 NCAA Tournament, while eight of those teams played into the third round of the tournament. The Seminoles will be tested early as three of their first four opponents participated in postseason play.
Following the season opener at Minnesota, Florida State will remain on the road to face Marquette, who claimed the BIG EAST regular season title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2011, on Sunday, August 19. The Seminoles will wrap-up its three-game road trip to open the year at UCF on Friday, August 24.
Florida State returns to Tallahassee for three consecutive home games including its home opener against Florida on Friday, August 31. The Seminoles will then host College of Charleston (Sept. 2) and Cal State Fullerton (Sept. 7).
The Seminoles will conclude the non-conference portion of their schedule with a road match at Arkansas on Sunday, September 9 and a home match against Jackson State on Friday, September 21.
FSU will once again compete in a 10-game ACC schedule with five home and five away matches leading up to the ACC Tournament first round matches which will be held on the campus of the higher seeded team on Sunday, October 28.
“We look forward to another challenging year in the ACC,” added Krikorian. “We had nine teams from our league qualify for the NCAA Tournament and three schools that advanced to the College Cup. The ACC is the best soccer conference in the nation and we feel that the non-conference portion of our schedule will help prepare us to face a very tough conference slate.”
Florida State will open conference play at home against two schools that joined the Seminoles at the 2011 College Cup in Kennesaw, Ga. FSU will square-off against national runner-up Duke on Thursday, September 13 followed by Wake Forest on Sunday, September 16. The Seminoles will also host Clemson, Virginia Tech and Virginia. Road tests for Florida State in league play include matches at North Carolina, NC State, Boston College, Maryland and Miami.
