FSU Falls to No. 1 UConn

HARTFORD, Conn. – The No. 20 Florida State women’s basketball team fell to No. 1 Connecticut, 93-62, Tuesday night at the XL Center in downtown Hartford, Conn.

The outcome marked the Huskies’ (11-0) college basketball record-setting 89th consecutive victory. After falling to Yale on Saturday, the Seminoles’ (9-3) defeat occurred a full two years to the day of the team’s last two-game regular-season losing streak.

In front of a capacity crowd of 16,294, junior forward Cierra Bravard paced the ’Noles with 19 points. Redshirt sophomore guard Alexa Deluzio added 16 for FSU.

Down 54-27 at halftime, the Seminoles never gave up were outscored by just four in the second period despite the growing excitement of a home crowd watching its team approach an improbable milestone.

“This was such a tremendous atmosphere,” FSU head coach Sue Semrau. “I congratulate UConn for accomplishing something so incredible; something I didn’t think we would ever see. I thought that we were a little nervous to start the game but I was proud of the way we came together and fought until the end.

“At one point I looked on to the court and we had all sophomores and freshmen out there against the best in the country … this was a great experience for everyone.”

While FSU battled as hard as possible, in the end there was just too much Maya Moore to handle.

UConn’s star came out firing and never stopped. She finished the night with a career-high 41 points.

For the game, the Huskies did something that no team had been able to do against Florida State all year; they won the rebound battle, 35-23. The Seminoles committed less turnovers.

The ’Noles shot 41 percent from the field compared to 61 percent from the home team.

Florida State now has a week before its next game. The Seminoles will host rival Florida on Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. at the Donald L. Tucker Center.
