Tallahassee, FL - On the strength of a 5-1 league record and a first place standing in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings, the Florida State men’s basketball team is ranked No. 22 in this week’s Associated Press poll. It marks the first time the Seminoles have been ranked this season and the third consecutive season that the team has been included in the national rankings.
“Being nationally ranked is a great thing for our players, our coaches and our university,” said ninth-year head coach Leonard Hamilton. “It shows that we are continuing to improve as a basketball team and that is the most important thing about where we stand at this point in the season. We are very happy to be ranked but we also know that it is only January and we want to continue to improve and be ranked in March. We are looking forward to a great week of practice and know that we will face a tremendous challenge at Clemson on Saturday and for the entire remainder of the season.”
Florida State, the third winningest program in the ACC in the last three seasons, is 15-5 overall and 5-1 in the ACC. The Seminoles’ first place standing in the ACC is the latest during a season that they have been in first place in the ACC standings. Florida State is tied with Duke at 5-1; the Seminoles defeated the Blue Devils, 66-61, on Jan. 12 in the only meeting of the season between the two teams.
The Seminoles were ranked during four weeks of the 2009-10 season and were ranked as high as No. 18 nationally. Florida State was ranked in five weeks during the 2008-09 season and was ranked as high as No. 16 nationally after playing in the ACC Championship game and being selected to play in the NCAA Tournament.
Florida State’s highest national ranking of No. 2 nationally came during the 1972-73 season. The Seminoles began the season ranked No. 2 and held that spot for the first two weeks of the season. Florida State was ranked as high as No. 6 nationally during the 1992-93 season when it finished with a 12-4 record in ACC play and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.
Florida State travels to play at Clemson on Saturday at Noon before returning home to play host to Wake Forest on Feb. 1 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are available for the Seminoles’ game against Wake Forest and for each of the four remaining home game this season.
