Tallahassee, FL - After a week hiatus, the men’s tennis team will resume its fall season at the 2010 USTA/ITA Regional Championships. The Seminoles will be competing in Gainesville, Fla., on the campus of the University of Florida.
Florida State will be playing against teams in the southeast region. This includes Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Miami, Central Florida, Florida A&M, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, Jacksonville, Mercer, North Florida, South Florida and Stetson.
Last year Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) won the singles title in which he automatically qualified for the ITA National Indoor Championships. This season the senior will enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed.
“We have had a great week of practice leading up to the regionals,” said Bowles. “All of us are prepared and excited for this weekend.”
Teammate Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) will be competing as the No. 2 seed. Sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) will be entering singles as a 13-16 seed.
Mirzadeh and Smith are the No. 1 seed for doubles play while Bowles and freshman Blake Davis (Austin, Fla.) will play as the No. 8 seed.
Junior Owen Long (Tallahassee, Fla.) is competing in the first round of competition today, Thursday, October 21 to advance to the round of 64. All other members of Florida State’s squad earned a bye and will begin play on Friday. In doubles play, each doubles pair earned a bye in the round of 64 and will begin play in the round of 32 to play Friday.
Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) will team up with one another in doubles while Long will compete with Jordan Kelly-Houston (Christchurch, New Zealand).
