Athens, GA - Georgia’s doubles teams enjoyed a perfect showing Friday, collecting eight wins in day one of the Georgia Invitational here at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Tennis Center.

The Bulldog freshmen tandem of Lilly Kimbell and Maho Kowase continued to excel, posting two more victories to extend their winning streak to six. They registered an 8-2 win over Chuda/Huljev (Kansas State) and then edged Hureau/Zapadalova (Indiana) 8-6. They are 6-1 as a team. Also, Kimbell and Kowase each picked up a singles win by identical 6-1,6-2 scores over their Kansas State opponents.

There was one matchup of nationally-ranked doubles teams Friday. Georgia’s 40th-ranked duo of Alexandra Anghelescu and Cameron Ellis defeated 68th-ranked Kayla Fujimoto and Evgeniya Vertesheva (Indiana) 8-2. The Hoosiers top player is 91st-ranked Leslie Hureau, and she cruised past Karoline Grymel (Troy) 6-3,6-3.

Kansas State freshman Petra Niedermayerova recorded the lone upset in beating Georgia junior Nadja Gilchrist, ranked 67th nationally, 6-2,6-4. Bulldog sophomore Kelli Jordan notched her first two career doubles wins Friday, earning one with freshman Alina Jerjomina and another with Gilchrist. Later, Jordan, got her first career singles win, beating KSU freshman Sarah Snodgrass 6-3,6-2.

“I felt nervous in my first doubles match today, but we played pretty well and after the win I got a lot more confidence for the rest of the day,” said Jordan who joined the team as a walk-on last January and had appeared in only three career matches before Friday. “In singles, it took a while for me to get going and then I hit a few good shots, and my confidence returned. It feels great to get a few wins as a Georgia Bulldog.”

“It was a great first day for us and I was especially proud of Kelli Jordan,” said Georgia coach Jeff Wallace. “She was a walk-on last year and didn’t get to play a lot. Today, she picked up her first three wins as a Bulldog, and we’re excited and proud of her.”

Saturday’s round-robin action will begin with doubles at 10 a.m. and singles slated for 1 p.m. Georgia players will be in action starting at 10 a.m. The tournament continues through Sunday. It is free admission.
