ATHENS, Ga. --- Five members of the Georgia men’s golf team have qualified for the United States Amateur Championship, which will be held Aug. 13-19 at Cherry Hills Country Club in Colorado.
Rising senior T.J. Mitchell, rising juniors Keith Mitchell and Joey Garber, and rising sophomores Nicholas Reach and Sepp Straka advanced to the U.S. Amateur from qualifying tournaments around the nation.
“We could not be happier for these guys,” Georgia coach Chris Haack said. “To have five from the same school in the field is definitely a point of pride for us. I know how hard these guys work at their golf, and this is a great opportunity for all of them.”
T.J. Mitchell was the medalist at Saugahatchee Country Club in Opelika, Ala., as he fired a two-round total of 133. Keith Mitchell won the tournament at Willow Creek Golf Club in Knoxville, Tenn., with a score of 136. Garber topped the field at the Kirtland Country Club’s Manakiki Course in Willoughby, Ohio, as he shot 139. At the Blue Ridge Country Club in Harrisburg, Pa., Reach shot 135 to claim medalist honors. Straka was the runner-up at the Piedmont Club in Atlanta as he fired 133. In addition, rising junior Michael Cromie finished as the first alternate at Cutter Creek Golf Club in Snow Hill, N.C.
Vinny Giles is the only Georgia golfer to win the U.S. Amateur, doing so in 1972.
