Tallahassee, FL - Tully Gym will be the site of a special exhibition on Tuesday, Sept. 4 as the No. 8 Florida State indoor volleyball team plays host to the Slovenian Junior National Team at 6 p.m.
The Seminoles are coming off a tournament title at the FSU Invitational, defeating FIU, Georgia and Florida A&M last weekend. In its first two weekends of action this season, FSU has won both tournaments, including the Comcast Lady Vol Classic crown against Tennessee, Iowa State and Cincinnati.
The Slovenian Junior National Team is currently playing in a United States tour, which includes a match at Florida on Monday night before making its way to Tallahassee on Tuesday. Slovenia recently swept Georgia at the Benson’s Hospitality Group Bulldog Invitational, and finished 1-2 at last weekend’s College of Charleston Tournament where it fell to Memphis and Charleston and defeated UNF.
Slovenia is not too far removed from its competition at the 2012 CEV Junior Volleyball European Championship. It finished seventh in the 44-team field, earning wins over Slovakia (3-2), France (3-0) and Belgium twice (3-0, 3-1).
FSU has been led once again by junior middle blocker and reigning AVCA All-American Ashley Neff. After the Kennesaw, Ga., native earned ACC Player of the Week honors and the Comcast Lady Vol Classic MVP, she followed with another good performance in week two.
In three matches at the FSU Invitational, Neff recorded 16 kills, a .444 hitting percentage and 24 blocks. Against her home state school of Georgia, Neff tied her career high with 14 blocks and nine kills.
The Seminoles are hitting .315 in the young season, and are averaging 3.33 blocks per set. Senior outside hitter Fatma Yildirim leads FSU with 54 kills, while junior outside hitter Olivera Medic has 48 kills and is attacking at a .381 clip.
Following the exhibition against Slovenia, Florida State gears up for its first nationally-televised match of the season as it travels to face Miami on Friday, Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
