Gainesville, FL - The University of Florida track and field teams,
coming off of four NCAA top-four finishes in 2010 including the NCAA
Indoor Men’s Championship, have announced Thursday their dynamic 2011 schedule, featuring two home meets, including the annual Pepsi Florida Relays.
The Florida men are coming off the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championship and their first Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championship since 1987, while the Gator women posted a pair of top-four national finishes last season and won the 2010 SEC Indoor Championship.
Florida begins the 2011 indoor season on Jan. 15 in State College, Pa.,
at the Nittany Lion Challenge before traveling to College Station,
Texas, to participate in the Texas A&M Challenge presented by Mondo
America. The prestigious two-day meet at Texas A&M, scheduled for Jan. 28-29, features Big 12 teams Kansas State, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Texas Tech, as well as SEC foes Georgia, Ole Miss and South Carolina.
The Gators will then travel to the Virginia Tech Elite Meet on Feb.
4-5 in Blacksburg, Va. The team will split up the following week (Feb.
11-12) with sprinters and jumpers heading to the Tyson Invitational,
throwers going to the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa, and distance
runners traveling to the Husky Classic in Seattle.
The 2011 SEC Indoor Championships are in Fayetteville, Ark., at the
Randal Tyson Track Center for the third time in the last four years when
the event is contested Feb. 25-27. Gator athletes will then embark on a
pair of last-chance meets at Notre Dame and Virginia Tech. The NCAA
Indoor Championships will take place March 11-12 in College Station,
Texas, for the second time in three years.
“We are very excited about our indoor schedule,” Florida head coach
Mike Holloway said. “We feel it will give us a chance to compete
against some of the finest teams and athletes in the country as we
prepare for the SEC and NCAA indoor meets.”
Florida will open its 2011 outdoor season with a pair of meets hosted
by the University of Central Florida in Orlando before playing host to
two consecutive home meets. The Gators welcome teams across the country to Gainesville for the 67th-Annual Pepsi Florida Relays on April 1-2 before playing host to the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational on April 16.
Florida heads to Philadelphia, Pa., and Des Moines, Iowa, April 28-30
for competition at two storied meets – the Penn Relays Carnival and
the Drake Relays.
The 2011 SEC Outdoor Championships will take place May 12-15 in Athens, Ga., before the Gators head to Bloomington, Ind., May 26-28 for the NCAA Preliminary Rounds.
The NCAA Outdoor Championships are scheduled for June 8-11 in Des
Moines, Iowa, as Drake University plays host to the NCAA Outdoor
Championships for the first time since 2008.
“Our outdoor schedule will give our fans a good opportunity to see
our teams compete as we spend the first two months of the outdoor season in the state of Florida,” Holloway said. “The Pepsi Florida Relays
is quickly becoming one of the best relay meets in the country and the
Tom Jones meet will be excellent this year as well, featuring top-tier
national programs Texas A&M, TCU, Kentucky and Nebraska.
“We are looking forward to another outstanding year,” Holloway
said. “As always, we want to make the Gator Nation proud of the track
and field programs.”
