STARKVILLE, Miss.-- Four University of Georgia softball players were named 2012 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division I All-Region selections on Thursday according to an announcement made by the organization.
Senior Kristyn Sandberg and junior Tess Sito were selected to the Southeast Region First Team at catcher and first base, respectively, while senior pitcher Erin Arevalo and freshman shortstop Paige Wilson were chosen to the Southeast Region Second Team.
Sandberg, Sito and Wilson have appeared and started in every game this season. The trio leads the team in most every offensive category, including batting average, runs, home runs and RBI. Earlier this month, Sandberg and Wilson were named to All-SEC teams, as Sandberg was a First Team honoree and Wilson a Freshman Team selection.
Arevalo leads the Bulldog pitching staff this season, as she holds a 23-7 record with 240 strikeouts and 1.45 ERA in 207 innings pitched. Sito has also seen time in the circle with a 9-1 record and 0.88 ERA in 12 appearances.
The NFCA Division I All-Region teams honor student-athletes from the Association’s 10 regions, as a total of 263 players representing 129 different institutions comprise this season’s regional teams, including first and second teams for each region.
The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, and all the honorees will now be eligible for selection to one of three 2012 NFCA Division I All-American teams. In addition, conference pitchers and players of the year not selected to the regional teams were added for All-America consideration.
The 2012 NFCA Division I All-America teams will be announced at 4 p.m. CDT on Wednesday, May 30, on NFCA.org.
