Los Angeles, CA - The early disappointment gave way to pure elation.

When the Gators started off on beam Saturday night at the NCAA Gymnastics Championships, the last thing anyone expected was to see Ashanee Dickerson and Kytra Hunter fall.

When the rotation was over, Gators coach Rhonda Faehn gathered her team in a huddle to regroup.

They regroup nicely.

"I just told them we can still do this,'' Faehn said. "You can still win."

The Gators listened and then went out and did it, finishing with the best scores on the vault, floor and bars to win the program's first national championship.

Florida joins Alabama, UCLA, Georgia and Utah as the only schools to claim national titles in women's gymnastics since the NCAA began to govern the sport for the 1981-82 season.

The Gators finished with a team score of 197.575 to edge second-place Oklahoma (197.375) and third-place Alabama (197.350).
