Athens, GA - The 15th-ranked Georgia women’s tennis team opens up the 2011 indoor season here Friday by playing host to the Georgia Invitational.
A three-day round-robin singles and doubles event at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Courts, the tournament will feature players from the host Bulldogs, No. 45 Indiana, Kansas State and Troy. The Georgia Invitational along with regular season matches are free.
The Bulldogs have five singles players ranked in the top 125 and two doubles teams in the top 50. Senior Cameron Ellis headlines the Bulldog contingent at No. 58 followed by junior Nadja Gilchrist (No. 67) and a trio of freshmen. Alina Jerjomina is ranked No. 84, Lilly Kimbell is No. 95 and Maho Kowase is No. 97. In doubles, the Gilchrist/Kimbell tandem is No. 18 while Ellis/Alexandra Anghelescu check in at No. 40. Ellis posted a team-best 10-3 mark this past fall including 3-0 versus ranked opponents. Kowase had a team-high 13 wins, going 13-5 with three wins over ranked foes. The Gilchrist/Kimbell duo went 4-3 including wins over three ranked teams.
Georgia junior Chelsey Gullickson, the 2010 NCAA singles champion, is not ranked because she did not play any collegiate events in the fall but instead competed in a few professional events including the US Open. Last year, the All-American finished the year ranked No. 6 in ITA singles and No. 6 in doubles with Gilchrist.
The Hoosiers have one ranked player in sophomore Leslie Hureau at No. 91 and two doubles teams tied at No. 68. The IU duos with a ranking are Huereau and Sophie Garre along with Kayla Fujimoto and Evgeniya Vertesheva.
Action begins Friday at 9:30 a.m., and the final matches are slated to go on at 8 p.m. Georgia entries will be in action Friday starting with doubles at 2 p.m. and then singles at 6:30 p.m. On Saturday, play begins with doubles featuring Georgia entries at 10 a.m. On Sunday, play features all singles and gets underway at 9 a.m. Bulldog entries will hit the courts at 12:30 p.m.
