Athens, GA - The Georgia men’s tennis team will conclude the fall portion of its schedule this weekend as junior Wil Spencer will travel to New York for the ITA National Indoor Championships, while eight other Bulldogs will compete in the Bulldog Scramble in Athens.
The National Indoor Championships is the second portion of the ITA Grand Slam featuring a 32-player singles field and a 16-team doubles draw. Spencer, a native of Ponce de Leon, Fla., earned a spot in the tournament with his win at the ITA Southeast Regional last month in Gainesville, Fla. He leads the team with an 11-2 record and enters the tournament on a seven-match winning streak. Spencer's first round match is scheduled for Thursday.
“Wil is looking forward to this national event with great anticipation,” said head coach Manuel Diaz. “He’s coming off probably his best college tournament to date and has an opportunity to play against some of top players in country. It’s a stage you want to be on.”
Meanwhile, Georgia will play host to the Bulldog Scramble Friday through Sunday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The Bulldogs will face players from Georgia Tech, Georgia State and North Carolina. Georgia players in the Bulldog Scramble include Drake Bernstein, Garrett Brasseaux, Sadio Doumbia, Javier Garrapiz, Campbell Johnson, Will Oliver, Hernus Pieters and Ignacio Taboada. Play is scheduled to begin each day at 10 a.m.
“For the rest of our guys it’s a very important tournament here,” Diaz said. “It provides an opportunity for us to close fall competition in a positive manner and then prepare for the work that’s ahead in the offseason.”
