Athens, GA - Seven members of the Georgia men’s tennis team will continue their fall seasons this weekend at the 2010 USTA/ITA Southeast Regional at the Ring Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Florida.
All of the Bulldogs will begin play in the second round on Friday with competition to continue through Monday. Singles and doubles champions earn an automatic place in the National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships Nov. 4-7 at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
“Our guys are excited about getting back on the court and we’re definitely fired up about measuring ourselves against some of our traditional rivals like Florida, Georgia Tech, and Florida State – which gave us a close match last year at the NCAAs,” said head coach Manuel Diaz. “There will be a host of schools with great players, especially at the top of the lineups, so it will be a big challenge. We’re excited to see our guys making progress.”
The tournament consists of 87 singles participants and 39 doubles teams representing a total of 14 schools in all divisions across Florida and Georgia. Thursday’s first-round action will round out a 64-player singles draw to begin Friday. Doubles are set to begin Friday as well.
Senior Drake Bernstein is the No. 6 seed in singles. The Winder, Ga., native will face Florida State’s Blake Davis on Friday. Junior Sadio Doumbia (13-16 seed) will meet Maksim Levanovick from Stetson on Friday as well, while classmate Ignacio Taboada will take on Miami’s Waylon Chin. Freshman Campbell Johnson is paired with Miami’s Gabriel Flores while fellow rookie Garrett Brasseaux will match up against another Hurricane in Carl Sundberg. Sophomore Will Oliver and junior Wil Spencer (9-12 seed) will await their singles opponents depending on Thursday’s first round results.
In doubles, the team of Bernstein and Spencer is seeded seventh and will take on a Miami pair in Sundberg and Omar Aly in the second round Friday after a first-round bye. Doumbia and Taboada will take on FSU’s Davis and Clint Bowles in the second round, while Brasseaux and Johnson are paired with UCF’s Joe Delinks and Blaze Schwartz.
