Athens, GA - The University of Georgia volleyball team opens a four-match home stand this weekend by playing host to No. 1-ranked Florida and South Carolina at the Ramsey Student Center.
The Bulldogs (11-14, 3-11 Southeastern Conference) will take on the top-ranked Gators (20-1, 13-0 SEC) on Friday at 7 p.m. ET and will face off against the Gamecocks (5-18, 2-11 SEC) on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
In the all-time series with UF, the Gators hold a 51-9 lead including a three-match winning streak. The two teams met earlier this season in Gainesville on Oct. 17, and Florida won that match 3-1 (19-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-21). Georgia's set one-win in that match marked just the second time in program history the Bulldogs have taken a set from a No. 1-nationally ranked opponent having previously done so against Southern California in 2004. Since that victory, Florida has won four more matches and will bring a 15-match winning-streak to Athens while Georgia will be looking to end a five-match losing streak that started with the loss to the Gators. The Bulldogs last win the series came in 2008 in Athens by a score of 3-2 (25-22, 18-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-12). That victory ended a 45-match winning streak in series by UF.
In the all-time series with South Carolina, the Bulldogs lead 42-16 including wins in the last two meetings. Earlier this season in Columbia on Oct. 15, Georgia defeated South Carolina 3-1 (25-16, 25-22, 23-25, 25-23). Last year, the two schools split the season series with Georgia winning the most recent meeting on the road in Columbia, 3-0 (27-25, 28-26, 28-26). The Gamecocks won the earlier of the two 2009 meetings in Athens, 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-23).
In addition to this weekend's matches, Georgia's four-match home stand will include contests against Kennesaw State next Tuesday and Ole Miss next Friday. After the home stand, only three matches will remain Georgia's 2010 regular season schedule as the Bulldogs will play on the road at Mississippi State on Friday, Nov. 19 and at Alabama on Sunday, Nov. 21 before concluding the year at home against Auburn on Wednesday, Nov. 24.
Admission is free to all regular season home matches in the Ramsey Student Center. For Friday's match against Florida, the first 300 fans will receive Georgia volleyball T-shirts, and following Sunday's match against South Carolina, the Bulldogs will hold an autograph session.
