Athens, GA - Georgia swimmers Melanie Margalis and Will Freeman have been chosen as Southeastern Conference Athletes of the Week, according to an announcement Tuesday by the league office.
Margalis was chosen as the SEC Female Swimmer of the Week. In Georgia’s win over Florida, the Clearwater, Fla., native won three events: the 100 breaststroke, the 200 breaststroke and the 200 individual medley. Her time of 1:57.62 in the 200 individual medley is the fastest in the nation this season. It is also the fastest dual-meet effort in school history and ranks sixth overall in Georgia annals. She has the SEC’s top times in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Margalis also swam on the victorious 200 medley relay as Georgia won for the 72nd straight time at Gabrielsen Natatorium, a streak that dates back to the 1995-96 season.
Freeman, a native of Atlanta, posted a second-place finish in the 1,000 freestyle, came in third in the 500 freestyle and took fifth in the 200 butterfly. Freeman’s time of 9:02.27 in the 1,000 freestyle is the sixth-fastest in school history and is second in the nation this season.
"Melanie and Will have worked extremely hard to put themselves in a position to make an impact for us," Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle said. "it's nice to see them recognized this way. I think the best is yet to come for both of them."
Last week, Jameson Hill was named the SEC Male Freshman of the Week for his efforts against North Carolina.
Georgia will take on Georgia Tech and Emory on Wednesday in Atlanta.
