Athens, GA -- The second-ranked University of Georgia men’s tennis team (23-2) received the No. 2 seed and was named one of 16 hosts for the upcoming first and second rounds of the NCAA Championships, it was announced Tuesday evening. The Bulldogs will welcome South Carolina State, Boise State, and Florida State to Athens for regional action on May 12-13, with Georgia to meet the S.C. State Bulldogs in the first round.
Georgia and S.C. State will meet on Sat., May 12 at noon, while Boise State and FSU will face off earlier in the day at 9 a.m. The winners will meet in the second round on Sun., May 13 at 2 p.m. The later rounds as well as the individual singles and doubles tournament will be held in Athens, Ga., at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex May 17-28. “This is a tremendous tribute to the hard work the guys put in all year,” said head coach Manuel Diaz. “It speaks to the sacrifices they made and what they did all year. To be seeded No. 2 is a testament to that. We knew it was a toss-up between Nos. 2, 3, 4, and 5, and now it’s time to go earn our seeding every step of the way.”
Georgia was an automatic entry into the NCAA field of 64 after winning the SEC Championships last month in Starkville, Miss.
The 2012 season marks Georgia’s 34th appearance in the tournament. The Bulldogs are coming off national semifinal trips on each of the last two seasons, while the squad has reached the finals in three of the last six years. Georgia has won six NCAA titles, last winning in back-to-back years in 2007-08.
South Carolina State reached the tournament by virtue of winning the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championship with a 4-3 win over Florida A&M.
