Chapel Hill, NC - The No. 6-ranked Georgia women's golf team carded a
7-over 295 in the opening round of the Tar Heel Invitational on Friday,
leaving the Bulldogs in 13th place.
"We just didn't make a lot of putts today," head coach Kelley Hester said. "We didn't make a lot of putts that we have been making. We did a nice job with some chips to get close, but then we didn't make the putts we needed to make to finish that out. It certainly wasn't a bad day, but we didn't get off to the good first-round start we did in our first two tournaments."
Georgia opened the season with a school-record, 11-under 277 at the NCAA Fall Preview and posted a 4-under 284 to begin the Mason Rudolph Championship.
Marta Silva Zamora led the Bulldogs with an even-par 72 on Friday. Georgia also counted a 73 by Emilie Burger and a pair of 75s from Milena Savich and Kendall Wright. Amelia Hill shot an 81.
The Bulldogs started at No. 10 and played the back side of the UNC Finley Golf Course first on Friday. Georgia was 4-over through two holes but played the remainder of the day at 3-over.
"Hopefully, we'll come out and play better tomorrow," Hester said. "In my mind, No. 10 and No. 11 are two of the more difficult holes on the course, certainly tough holes to start on. We didn't get off to a good start and then couldn't get much going. We hung in there and played better later We'll start at No. 10 again on Saturday, but I think we know we have to get out of the blocks a little bit better tomorrow."
Silva Zamora bogeyed No. 10 and No. 11 and then lost an additional stroke at No. 15. She birdied No. 16, No. 17 and No. 18 to turn at even. A double-bogey at No. 5 pushed her back to 2-over, but she birdied No. 7 and No. 8 en route to her sixth par-or-better effort in seven rounds this
No. 1 Alabama grabbed an eight-shot lead with an 11-under 277. Sixteen of 16 teams broke 300 on Friday. Trailing the Crimson Tide are No. 4 LSU at 285, No. 3 Duke and No. 23 Florida at 288, No. 14 Tulane and No. 16 Michigan State at 289, No. 10 Virginia at 290, No. 15 Wake Forest and No. 20 South Carolina at 291, Texas A&M at 292, No. 12 Auburn at 293, No. 11 North Carolina at 294, the Bulldogs at 295, No. 7 Vanderbilt at 298 and Denver and Florida State at 299.

McChrystal. For Georgia, Silva Zamora is tied for 24th, Burger is tied for
36th, Savich and Wright are tied for 54th and Hill is tied for 90th.
