Tulsa, OK - Georgia Tech All-American Guillermo Gomez won his first two matches at the D’Novo/ITA All-American Tennis Championships Thursday, advancing to the round of 32 in the first national championship event of the year.
The senior from Alicante, Spain, seeded fourth in this event and ranked fourth in the country, cruised past qualifier Dean Jackson of San Diego, 6-3, 6-0, then defeated 33rd-ranked Ionut Beleleu of Oklahoma, 6-1, 2-6, 6-1.
The victories improved Gomez’ record to 8-0 for the fall and increased his career victory total to 93. He will face No. 27 Drew Courtney of Virginia in Friday’s round of 32. Quarterfinal and semifinal matches are set for Saturday, with the championship match scheduled for Sunday.
His teammate, sophomore Juan Spir, saw his run come to an end, however, in a 6-4, 6-4 loss to 10th-seeded Austen Childs of Louisville. Spir, from Medellin, Colombia, had won six matches in the pre-qualifying and qualifying rounds to get here.
He remains active in the tournament, however, teaming with Tech junior Kevin King in the doubles draw, which began Thursday night.
