El Paso, TX - Georgia Tech’s John-Tyler Griffin shot a 3-under-par 68 Tuesday in the final round of the Western Refining College All-American Classic golf tournament, but it was not enough to overtake the leaders, and the Yellow Jacket senior tied for second place, three shots off the pace.

Griffin, ranked 13th in the nation by Golfstat and 18th in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, posted his fourth top-10 individual finish in five events this fall, carding rounds of 71-65-68 for a 9-under-par total of 204. The Wilson, N.C., native tied with Tain Lee of Clairmont Mudd Scripps, three strokes behind San Diego’s Alex Ching, who shot a 67 Tuesday and finished the tournament at 12-under 201.

Griffin thus fell short of becoming the fourth Georgia Tech player to win in the 36-year history of this event, which annually beings together 32 of the nation’s premier collegiate golfers as part of the Sun Bowl college bowl game festivities. Previous Tech winners were David Duval, Matt Kuchar and Nicholas Thompson.

Paul Haley, a Tech senior from Dallas, Texas, also played in the event, tying for 23rd place with a 2-over-par tournament total of 215. Haley, ranked 86th nationally, was an honorable mention All-American last spring as was Griffin, and had a pair of top-10 finishes this fall.
