Tallahassee, FL - FCCAA No. 3/NJCAA No. 4 Gulf Coast Community College used an impressive 19-4 run to subdue No. 4/No. 13 Tallahassee Community College and secure a 66-49 win in the Panhandle Conference opener for both schools on Tuesday evening.
With the Lady Eagles within three (48-45) of the defending national champions, Gulf Coast freshmen LaQuinta Jefferson and Bre’Anna Lewis combined to score ten unanswered points over a seven-minute stretch late in the second half to put the contest out of reach for the Lady Eagles (11-3, 0-1 PC).
Gulf Coast built an impressive 40-25 lead at the intermission but that lead that was erased as the Lady Eagles opened the second half with an impressive 20-8 run of their own, capped by a Devin Matkin three-point field goal at the 8:36 mark. That turned out to be as close as the Lady Eagles would get from what proved to be an insurmountable early deficit.
Jefferson and University of Alabama signee Kyra Crosby led four double–digit scorers for Gulf Coast (12-3, 1-0), sharing game-high honors with 16 points each. Ashley Rush finished with 14 and Lewis chipped in with 11.
Matkin was the only Lady Eagle to register in double-digits with 11. Kamiya Burwell added eight for Tallahassee, who returns to action on Saturday when it travels to top-ranked Pensacola State College. Game time is slated for 6:30.
Saturday's game will be carried live online by Panhandle Sports Broadcasting at www.PSBlive.com.
