Birmingham, AL - Despite not having played a single match in Valdosta State history, the VSU soccer program was picked to finish sixth out of eight Gulf South Conference teams by GSC coaches.

Leading the pack is the seven-time GSC Champion West Florida, receiving six of seven possible first place votes. North Alabama was next with four second place votes, two first place votes and a third place vote. Third on the list was Christian Brothers with three second place votes and four third place votes.

After Christian Brothers was Alabama-Huntsville and West Georgia followed by Valdosta State. The Blazers received six fifth place votes and one seventh place vote to finish two points behind West Georgia in the preseason rankings.

Behind Valdosta State in the preseason coaches’ poll is Delta State behind new head coach Paul Babba. West Alabama rounds out the group in its first season as well.

North Alabama and West Florida dominated the 2011 Preseason All-GSC Team with five players each. Both Christian Brothers and West Georgia each placed one player on the preseason squad.

While Valdosta State had no players from 2010 to make the Preseason All-GSC Team, the Blazers did place four on the list of top newcomers for 2011. Goalkeeper Olivia Mills, midfielder Caroline Moore, defender Lizzie Lohmar and forward Rebecca Miller all made the list.

The foursome is composed of all freshman with two players from Georgia: Miller and Lohmar. Moore comes from Greenville, S.C., and Mills from Colorado Springs, Colo.

Don’t miss four of the Gulf South Conference’s top newcomers in action at Valdosta State’s season opener at 7 p.m., September 1, against Georgia Southwestern.
