Tallahassee, FL - The Florida State women’s basketball team plays its first and only exhibition prior to the regular season as it hosts Faulkner University on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Donald L. Tucker Center.

Sunday’s exhibition contest includes free admission for all fans. The 2013-14 FSU women’s basketball team will also be signing autographs located on the concourse level.

The Seminoles are heading into the upcoming season with optimism after hauling in a talented freshman class following the graduation of five key seniors from 2012-13. Freshman guard Brittany Brown and center Kai James are two prominent members of the class who are expected to contribute greatly this year.

James, a 6-foot-5 McDonald’s All-American, gives the Seminoles three McDonald’s All-Americans on the current roster with the inclusion of senior forward Natasha Howard and redshirt sophomore guard Morgan Jones.

“Losing five seniors last year, they really set a high standard or a Seminole standard as we call it,” head coach Sue Semrau said. “Our two seniors now are having to teach a large group what that standard is. Putting on the uniform for the first time will mean great expectations for them to go out and perform, and more importantly as a coach it’s about them getting that full-time experience.”

Howard enters her senior season as a bona fide All-America contender. The Toledo, Ohio, native is one of just 10 ‘Noles in the 1,000-point, 700-rebound club and recently was named a Senior CLASS Award candidate for her outstanding characteristics. The team captain has increased her scoring average each season and hopes to culminate her career with her best year yet.

Jones is a highly-touted transfer who sat out last season due to NCAA transfer rules. The Lake Mary, Fla., native earned Big Ten All-Freshman honors two seasons ago at Northwestern averaging 13.9 points per game and six rebounds. She was named to the ACC Newcomer Watch List just a few weeks ago.

The ‘Noles were picked to finish tied for fifth in the expanded ACC by the Blue Ribbon Panel, and were chosen by the league’s coaches to finish sixth. FSU is receiving 18 votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll and adds two votes in the AP Top 25 Poll.

“I think it’s so young in the season that we need to look at this (game) not as ‘Oh, it’s here,’ but more like ‘We have an opportunity to get better,’” Semrau added about its exhibition versus Faulkner.

The Faulkner Lady Eagles are coming off a successful campaign after finishing 26-7 and winning a championship in the Southern States Athletic Conference West Division. They earned a spot in the Sweet 16 of the NAIA national tournament in 2012-13.

Faulkner opened its season on Friday with a 69-57 victory over Thomas University at the Jimmy Faulkner Classic. It plays Concordia College Selma on Saturday at 5 p.m. before playing the Seminoles.

Season tickets for the 2013-14 Florida State women's basketball season are on sale now and can be purchased at Seminoles.com or by calling the Seminole Ticket Office at 1-888-FSUNole.
