Athens, GA - Freshman Ronika Ransford was one of six Georgia players in double figures as the 19th-ranked Lady Bulldogs rolled past Division II Lander, 88-50, Wednesday evening in exhibition action inside the newly-renovated Stegeman Coliseum.
Ransford joined sophomore Jasmine James with a game-best 13 points, followed by Anne Marie Armstrong and Meredith Mitchell each with 12 and Jasmine Hassell with 11. Rookie Khaalidah Miller capped the double-digit brigade as the freshman added 10 points in her first collegiate outing.
Lander starts the 2010-11 season ranked No. 4 nationally in Division II. The Lady Bearcats are coming off a school-record 27-win season, a Peach Belt championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament “Sweet 16.”
“There are a lot of parts that I’m not impressed with and there are other parts that I am impressed with,” said head coach Andy Landers. “I am more impressed than concerned. I do have concerns about rebounding and defense, but I think as time goes on we’ll learn to play harder, learn to play better together, and eliminate turnovers. I just think there is an incredible upside to our team.”
Lander led the Lady Bulldogs 12-6 with five minutes elapsed after a three pointer from Mukia Myrick. But Mitchell converted on a lay-up to tie things up at 14-all with 10:57 to go in the first frame. Georgia took the lead on its next possession and never looked back.
A Lady Bulldog run between the 8:19 and 5:02 mark built the Georgia lead to 16, 34-18, with 5:02 remaining in the first, but back-to-back field goals from Armstrong and James to close the half gave the home team a 26-point lead, 47-21, at the intermission.
Hassell led the Lady Bulldogs with eight first-half points on 4-of-5 shooting. Armstrong followed suit with seven while three Georgia players chipped in six through the first 20:00.
Georgia established a 30-point edge, 51-21, as Mitchell made good on a jumper in the first two minutes of the second half. The Lady Bulldogs continued to roll after the break, answering Lander’s runs with scores of their own and not allowing more than two consecutive Lady Bearcat scores all second half.
Armstrong stepped up for a three with 3:56 to play that pushed the lead to 37, 82-45, while a late three for Miller gave the Lady Bulldogs their largest lead of the contest at 42, 87-45, with 3:25 remaining and Georgia closed out the contest with a lay-in for Porsha Phillips with the clock nearing zero.
Phillips ended with seven points to go along with her game-high 10 rebounds, in addition to three blocks and three steals. Mitchell, Ransford, and Ebony Jones each grabbed eight boards for the Lady Bulldogs.
Lander was led by Shannon McKever’s 13 points, while Tasheba Butler was next with nine.
