Athens, GA - Georgia soccer freshmen Nicole Locandro and Alexa Newfield attended the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development (ODP) Girls Under-19 Winter Training Dec. 18-20 at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.
Locandro and Newfield were included on the 11-player Region III squad, competing for 18 spots on the U-19 All-Star roster that will travel to the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup from June 26-July 17, 2011 in Germany. Nearly 50 players were invited from the four regions, going through morning and afternoon field sessions followed by evening video reviews and lectures on each of the three days.
Lisa Cole, assistant coach of the WPS Boston Breakers, and Albertin Montoya, former WPS FC Gold Pride coach, led the sessions in addition to the region coaches.
The ODP program is known as the premier identification and development program for the nation’s youth seeking the opportunity to compete at the national, professional, and collegiate levels.
Locandro and Newfield combined to score 13 goals and chip in nine assists as rookies for the Bulldogs in 2010, while Newfield led all Georgia players with 20 points on the season.
