Tallahassee, FL - Freshman Trevor McDade scored a career-high 34 points and sophomore C.J. Washington added 25 to lead FCSAA No. 10 Tallahassee Community College to a 91-73 win over previously undefeated East Georgia State College (10-1) on Friday evening at the Comfort Inn Holiday Classic.
Tallahassee improved to 11-4 heading into Saturday’s non-conference finale against Gordon (Ga.) State College, who defeated Florida State College at Jacksonville, 65-50, in Friday’s first men’s game at the Classic.
Tallahassee shot 57.4 percent (31-of-54) from the floor on Friday, thanks in large part to McDade and Washington, who hit a combined 21-of-26 field goal attempts.
McDade did most of his damage in the opening 20 minutes, shooting 9-of-11 and scoring 22 points to help stake Tallahassee to a 45-31 lead at the intermission.
Looking to prove its 10-0 record was no fluke, East Georgia State outscored the Eagles, 20-8, over the first eight minutes of the second half and pulled within a basket on D.J. Felder’s three-pointer with 11:48 left in the game. The Bobcats stayed within two possessions as late as the 5:57 mark following Jordan Johnson’s three-pointer that cut the Eagles’ lead to 67-62.
But Tallahassee needed less than 90 seconds to put the game away.
Washington ignited a 9-0 run in the span of 1:28 to help Tallahassee open up a 76-62 lead. The Eagles’ lead swelled to 20 in the final minute of the game before settling for the 18-point victory.
Bernard Kline added 15 to give the Eagles a third double-figure scorer.
McDade’s 34 points tied for the 13th best single-game performance in Tallahassee history and was the most in a game by an Eagle since Marvell Waithe’s 39 against South Georgia Tech on November 18, 2008.
Tre’ Hagood led a quartet of double-figure scorers for East Georgia State with 18. Jon Blair added 17. Felder scored 13 and Johnson, 11.
East Georgia State will face Florida State College at Jacksonville in Saturday’s 3 p.m. game.
