Mercer edges FAMU, 7-6

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (April24) - Mercer University held off a Florida A&M Baseball team late innings rally as the Bears held on for a 7-6 win over the Rattlers, here Wednesday afternoon at Moore-Kittles Field in their final game of their two-game series.

FAMU (4-38) was led by Kelvin Singletary as he recorded three of the Rattlers 10 hits, followed by both Marlon Gibbs and Bennie Robinson as they finished with two hits each for FAMU.

MU (33-12) also finished with 10 hits as the Bears had three batters to finish with two hits each.

Dimitri Kourtis (3-0) picked up the win for MU as he gave up two hits, and striking out three in his two innings of relief, while David Teasley (3) got the save as he pitched one-third of an inning, striking out the only batter he faced.

Cameron Simms (0-1) received the loss for the Rattlers as he pitched two innings, allowing three hits, one earned run and striking out one in the nine batters he faced.

MU plated three runs in the top of the first inning on a Nick Backlund double to right field scoring both Sasha LaGarde and Chesney Young and then Backlund would score on a David Reid-Foley double to left center, giving the Bears a 3-0 lead.

FAMU made the score 3-1 in the bottom of the first as Gibbs scored on a MU’s infielder’s error.

The Bears added to their lead in the top of the second inning as Derrick Workman singled to the right side scoring Logan Gaines and Backlund would record his second double of the game scoring Workman, making the score 5-1 in favor of MU.

Gibbs scored his second run of the game on a Reginald Grant ground out to second base in the bottom f the third inning, cutting the Bear’s lead to 5-2.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Jared Walker would score on a Grant fielder’s choice, following a Singletary three-run blast to left center, giving the Rattlers a 6-5 lead.

MU would tie the game at 6-6 in top of the eighth inning on an Evan Boyd single to left center, scoring Reid-Foley. Then the Bears would take the lead on a Young single to right field scoring Sasha LaGarde in the top of the ninth inning, for the 7-6 finale.

FAMU will return to action on Saturday, April 27 as they will host North Carolina Central in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader in a 1 p.m. start at Moore-Kittles Field
