Tulsa, OK - Seminoles Vahid Mirzadeh and Owen Long both posted wins today, October 8, in singles play. Mirzadeh competed at the D’Novo/ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., while Long is at the UM Invitational in Miami. The ‘Noles will compete tomorrow in both tournaments.
No. 35 Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) defeated No. 38 Louis Cant of Mississippi State in the second round of the main consolation draw in straight sets 6-3, 7-5. He will face No. 7 Steve Johnson of USC Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
Also competing at the D’Novo/ITA All-Americans was doubles partners Mirzadeh and sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.). The No. 17 duo lost to Tulsa’s No. 38 pair of Cliff Marstand and Ashley Watling 8-4 in the first round of the main draw consolation.
The other part of team was competing at the IM Invitational. Junior Long (Tallahassee, Fla.) was the only ‘Nole to notch a win on the day. He defeated Nicholas Spinazze of Arkansas 6-4, 6-2.
Unranked freshman Blake Davis (Austin, Texas) played in a close three-set match against Miami’s top player No. 72 Christian Blocker. Davis lost 2-6, 6-2, 10-7. Sophomore Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) faced No. 96 Carl Sundberg of Miami but lost 7-5, 6-1.
Jordan Kelly-Houston (Christchurch, New Zealand) fell in three sets to Romain Deridder of USF. The sophomore won the first set but was then defeated 2-6, 7-6(3), 10-8. Sophomore Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) lost in three sets as well. Sebastian Hagn of USF defeated him 6-4, 6-7(5), 10-6.
The Seminoles lost both doubles matches as well. Davis and Reed paired up but lost to Gregoire Lehman and Nokolas Zogaj of Arkansas 8-6. The duo of Kelly-Houston and Bucaro fell 8-5 to Derek Madon and Oliver Webb of Florida Atlantic.
