TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State men’s tennis team hosts the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships beginning Thursday. This marks the first time the tournament is in Tallahassee with 15 teams and 100 players competing at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The tournament runs all day and will last until Monday.
“For us we’ve never hosted it so it’s great for us to showcase that we can host a big event,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “Hopefully down the road we can host something bigger like the NCAA Championships. I think it’s something we want to see the community come out and watch to get behind it. I think it’s a good opportunity for our guys to play on their home courts. When you play in your home facility you feel more comfortable.”
Beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday is the qualifying singles where players will compete to make it into the main draw. Florida State has two players competing on Thursday in freshman Michael Rinaldi and redshirt-freshman Joo Gauer. Gauer takes on Alex Doherty of Georgia Southern at 9:00 a.m. while Rinaldi plays at 11:30 a.m.
The main draw of singles begins Friday at 9:00 a.m. with the main draw of doubles beginning afterwards. In the main draw for the Seminoles are seniors Andres Bucaro, Jordan Kelly-Houston and Anderson Reed along with sophomores Dominic Cotrone, Benjamin Lock and Cristian Gonzalez Mendez.
