Noles in the Minors Update

With Major League baseball currently on their All-Star break, several former Seminoles are putting in work in the minors to someday reach that level. Many have seen recent success and some have been promoted, while a few who were playing college ball six weeks ago are now excelling at the professional level.

Tyler Holt has been lighting up Double-A pitchers from the Eastern League as of late, batting .372 in his last 10 games. The Akron Aeros’ centerfielder snapped a 16-game hitting streak on July 16 which started back on June 29 and included seven multi-hit games. Holt batted .369 (24-for-65) with six doubles, 10 runs scored and 10 RBI over the course of the streak.

On the mound, Geoff Parker has been a consistent reliever for the Modesto Nuts. In his last eight appearances – a span of 17.1 innings – he has recorded three holds and a 1.56 ERA. He has allowed only eight hits and three earned runs over that stretch and posted 10 strikeouts. Parker has helped Modesto climb into a tie for the lead in the North Division in the second half standings of the California League (Class A Advanced).

Devon Travis earned a promotion to the Class A Advanced Lakeland Flying Tigers on June 29 after batting .352 in 77 games for the West Michigan Whitecaps. His hot season hasn’t slowed down yet, as he is batting even better at the next level. Travis has posted a .400 average (20-for-50) with four doubles, a home run, three RBI and eight runs scored in his 13 games of high-A ball. He is currently on a seven-game hitting streak, including three three-hit games.

Even though the Class A Short-Season only started a few weeks ago, Hunter Scantling has wasted no time asserting his dominance on the mound. The towering righty has limited opposing batters to a .198 average and is 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA in seven games for the Connecticut Tigers. He has only given up one run in his last 12.1 innings and averages 3.1 innings per appearance this season. Scantling tossed a season-high 5.0 innings with two strikeouts and gave up only one hit against the Vermont Lake Monsters on June 27.

Along with Scantling, Scott Sitz is a strong arm out of the bullpen for the Connecticut Tigers. Sitz is 1-1 with a 1.46 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 12.1 innings. He has allowed an earned run in only one of his eight relief appearances. He earned the win against the Williamsport Crosscutters on July 10 without giving up a hit or a run over the final 2.2 innings as the Tigers won in extra innings.

Robby Coles has brought the noise to the Kingsport Mets of the Rookie Appalachian League. The righty closer has already posted three saves in four appearances and has not given up a run in his 5.0 innings of work. Coles has only allowed three hits on the season and batters are hitting a mere .167 against him.
