ORLANDO, FL (Mar.12) - The Florida A&M baseball team fought valiantly, but in the end they dropped a heartbreaker to the UCF Knights 6-4 at Jay Bergman Field. In front of nearly 1,000 fans, the Rattlers gave the Knights much more than they bargained for, tying the game at three, with three runs in the sixth inning. In the end, the UCF bats would bring in three more runs, while the Rattlers were able to muster just one more.
Sylvester Peck, Ryan Debi and Marlon Gibbs, led FAMU from the plate with two hits each. Peck and Gibbs would also account for one run each. Reginald Grant and Bennie Robinson accounted for the other two FAMU hits. The Rattlers were scoreless for five innings, then exploded for the most runs in a single inning with three in the sixth inning.
FAMU left six runners on base and had one error in the game. Kelvin Priestly got the start on the mound for the Rattlers, going six innings, giving up four hits and three earned runs (four total). Priestly struck out six of the 21 batters he faced, while giving up not a single walk. Christopher Priestly itched part of an inning to get the Rattlers out of a jam, giving up two walks, one hit and two runs. John Robert pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up one walk and one hit. Stephen Dollar pitched tho-thirds of an inning, allowing one run, one walk, and one earned run. Brandon Fleming also pitched two-thirds of an inning facing one batter and giving up no runs, hits or walks.
UCF was led by chris Taladay who went 3-for-4 on the day, scoring one run. Parker Webster scored two runs on one hit, while JoMarcos Woods and Erik Hampe had two RBI each. Brian Adkins pitched six innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs, while striking out four. Spencer Davis got the win, pitching three innings, allowing two hits, one run and one walk.
The Rattlers and Knights will play once again Wed., Mar. 13 at 6:30 p.m.
