Winter Park, FL -- Valdosta State struggled Monday afternoon against two tough Rollins team with the Lady Blazers dropping, 6-3, and the Tars sweeping the Blazers, 9-0.
The Lady Tars jumped to an early 3-0 lead after sweeping doubles. Sara Braun and Alina Nagel fell in the top spot, 8-5, while Tina Trautmann and Maja Ehses surrendered the second position, 9-7. Juliana Boehm and Jessica Tuggle lost in third doubles, 8-3.
In singles action, Trautmann, Boehm and Nagel were able to snag victories in the fourth, fifth and sixth positions. The top three singles, however, all fell.
The men had little hope. The Blazers, like the Lady Blazers, dropped all three doubles matches as well, and could not gain any momentum in singles.
Valdosta State’s best chances came in the first and third singles positions. No. 22 Christian Hansen pushed No. 1 Lucas Jovita to the edge in the opening set, tying 6-6, but dropping the tiebreaker, 7-2. Jovita won the second set, 6-4, to clinch the point.
Niklas Herbring was the only Blazer to force a third set. He dropped the first against Malte Christesen, 6-4, but rebounded in the second, 6-3. Christesen ran away in the final set, 10-6.
The Blazers and Lady Blazers return to action this weekend in Pensacola, Fla., against West Florida, Delta State and Concordia for the men, and BYU-Hawaii, Delta State and UC-San Diego for the women.
