London, England - Allison Schmitt of Georgia earned a silver medal and set the American record in the women's 400-meter freestyle on Sunday at the Olympics.

Schmitt, a rising senior from Canton, Mich., placed second with a time of 4:01.77. France's Camille Muffat led the entire race and stopped the clock in an Olympic-record 4:01.45, nipping Schmitt by less than half a stroke in the Olympic Aquatics Centre.

Schmitt's effort eclipsed the American record of 4:02.20 set by Katie Hoff in 2008.

In two days of competition at the London Games, Schmitt has two American records and two medals. On Saturday, she anchored the second-place 4x100-meter freestyle relay that lowered the American mark.

Incoming freshman Brittany MacLean of Canada placed seventh in the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 4:06.24. During the prelims, former Lady Bulldog Wendy Trott of South Africa came in 22nd in 4:11.63.

In the women's 100-meter breaststroke, former Lady Bulldog Sarah Poewe of Germany finished 11th with a time of 1:07.68.

Incoming freshman Matias Koski of Finland placed 31st in the men's 200-meter freestyle, stopping the clock in 1:49.84.
