Tallahassee, FL -- Florida State held it second closed scrimmage of the spring Monday inside Doak Campbell Stadium as the Seminoles gear up for their annual Garnet & Gold Spring Game Saturday. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m. and can be viewed on with a replay to be aired on ESPNU.

“I thought we played very poorly on both sides,” FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher said. “I thought the first scrimmage was better than this one.”

“On offense - no consistency; had some not smart turnovers at times. On defense – gave up a bunch of big plays, terrible on third down. At times both sides just dominated the other side.”

Fisher said at times during the scrimmage, he made the quarterbacks live --- wanted to see how the offensive and defensive lines played.

“A very poor scrimmage overall … on both sides.”

More details of the second scrimmage are expected to be released in the coming days. FSU will take Tuesday off before returning to the practice field on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. After losing a day last week due to inclement weather, the Seminoles will use a make-up date to practice on Thursday before Saturday’s spring game.

more from Jimbo Fisher after the scrimmage:

On whether it was poor play or just a bad day:

“It better not be a bad day. That’s a loss. They better learn to get that fixed. I don’t think right now we’re a very good team.”

On how much does it concern him that he didn’t see progression from the first scrimmage:

“It does. It should get better, not worse. We need to take a look at why. We’ll make some moves, make some adjustments; sit some guys down and play some other guys. There were some guys who did some good things, (but) not enough.”

“Another thing I was disappointed on both sides of the ball was we had some poor penalties, too; some not very smart penalties. Penalties will cost you a game. We had a drive stopped on defense and get a hold and a facemask. Make a big play on offense and jump offside – just silly things we haven’t been doing.”

On what the best way is to clean up the mistakes before Saturday’s spring game:

“Practice. You’ve got two practices left. I’m glad we’ve got two instead of one. So we’ve got to clean that up and get better.”

On the play of the receivers:

“KB [Kelvin Benjamin] jumped out and made some nice plays.”

On whether he’s happy with the progress of the starting five offensive linemen right now:

“I wouldn’t say I was happy. We’ve made a lot of progress; we’re a lot better. We’re nowhere where we need to be, are close to be(ing) and can be. I think we have a chance to be a very good group – I really do. At times they do some real good things against our guys who are real good players. We’ll get better.”

On the status of position battles:

“Every spot on this team is open – from receiver to tight end to quarterback to O-line to nose tackle to middle linebacker to safety. We’re going to find guys who are going to play winning football. There are too many talented players on this team.”

On seeing any improvement in punting from the first to second scrimmage:

“I thought it was real good today. Cason Beatty got a lot of the punts and I thought kicked well, and Dillon Kidd hit a couple nice ones. That was one of the things I was very happy with.”

On whether he saw some players attempting to step up and lead:

“Telvin, Amp – some of the guys on defense – EJ tried on offense. … You’ve just got to try and fight your way through those days. Sometimes I like to measure a team when you’re not having a good day. How do you react to that? There may be a day when you go out there and it’s not going right. Can you manage those tight situations and find a way to get yourself back in the groove and play winning football. You’ve got to win games we you’re not having your A-game.”
