Southern Rallies Past Rattlers, 21-14

Atlanta, GA - The 2012 edition of the Bank of America Atlanta Football Classic ended in dramatic fashion as many other AFC’s have in the past. Southern University scored 21 second half points to rally past the Florida A&M Football team, 21-14 here Saturday afternoon at the Georgia Dome.

FAMU would score early as they took advantage of an SU fumble setting up a seven-yard TD pass to Travis Harvey from Damien Fleming with 12:56 remaining, giving the Rattlers a 7-0 lead after the Chase Varnadore PAT.

SU would tie the game on the second possession of the third quarter as the Jaguars would march 80 yards on 11 plays, taking six minutes off the clock as Sylvester Nzekwe scored on a 14-yard TD pass from Dray Joseph at the 7:07 mark of the game, tying the game at 7-7 after the Gregory Pittman PAT.

FAMU would regain the lead as Harvey caught his second TD pass of the game on a 51-yard pass from Fleming, with 2:10 to go in the third quarter, making the score 14-7 in favor of the Rattlers after the Varnadore PAT.

Joseph would toss his second TD pass of the game to Lee Doss from seven yards out, capping a seven-play, 65-yard drive by the Jaguars, tying the game at 14-14, after the Pittman PAT.
The Jaguars would score the next TD just six minutes later as SU’s Cory Roy would force a Fleming fumble on the FAMU 33. Roy would then recover the fumble on the FAMU 27 and scamper to the FAMU six-yard line, where he would be tackled from behind and fumble the football. Daniel Brown for SU would recover the fumble and the score the Jaguars’ final TD of the game for the win with 7:33 to go in the contest.

FAMU was paced by Fleming as he passed for 256 yards as he completed 30 passes in 35 attempts with two TDs, while Travis Harvey recorded his third 100-yard game of the season as recorded eight catches for 108 yards with two TDs.

Behind him was Lenworth Lennon as he tallied seven catches for 76 yards.

Devan Roberts was named the FAMU’s Bank of America Most Valuable Player as he finished the contest with nine tackles, one tackle for loss, one interception and one pass breakup.
Joseph was named SU’s AFC MVP as he completed 25-of 35 passes for 226 yards with a pair of TD passes and one interception, to lead the Jaguars.

Doss, was the hot receiver for the Jaguars as he collected 91 yards on 11 catches with one TD, followed by Nzekwe with four catches for 54 yards and one TD.
Anthony Balancier, led SU’s defense as he finished the game with 10 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and one sack.

Southern raises their record to 2-2 on the season, while FAMU lowers their record to 2-3.
Travis Harvey extends his streak to five games as he has caught at least one TD pass in each of the five games, that he has played in.

Up next for the Rattlers will be Howard University as FAMU will travel to Washington, D.C to take the Bison at Green Stadium in a 1 p.m. start.
