TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 5, 2011) - Freshman third baseman Matt Duval went 5-for-5 on Saturday afternoon to lead Tallahassee Community College past Grand Rapids (Mich.) Community College, 13-5, in the Eagles' final Panhandle Conference tuneup.
Duval drove in four runs and scored once, helping the Eagles (13-13) complete the three-game sweep of the Raiders. Tallahassee has now won four of its last five games heading into Monday's PC opener at Eagle Field against Gulf Coast Community College.
After yielding a run in the first inning, Tallahassee starter Hayden Jordan settled down and pitched into the sixth. Meanwhile, the Eagles were busy building a 5-1 lead.
Duval got Tallahassee on the board in the second with a run-scoring single to tie the game at one. One inning later, Cody Ray doubled home David Hall to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.
Hall homered in his next at-bat, a solo shot in the fifth to extend Tallahassee's lead to 3-1. Two batters later, Chris Norton added a solo homer of his own. The Eagles added one more in the fifth on an RBI-double from Duval to give Jordan a four-run cushion.
Jordan ran into trouble in the sixth, however. A single, walk and hit batsman loaded the bases and ended his afternoon.
Grand Rapids eventually scored four runs in the inning to tie the game at 5-all.
Tallahassee answered in the bottom half, courtesy of a two-run homer from David Donald. The Eagles added two more in the seventh, the first on an RBI-single from Duval, to take a 9-5 lead.
Tallahassee finished the scoring with four runs in the eighth.
Donald, Ryan Connelly and Devin Bujnovsky each had two hits for Tallahassee.
Kraig Richmond, who entered the game during Grand Rapids' big fifth inning, picked up the win with 3.2 scoreless innings in relief.
