PENSACOLA, Fla. (April 27, 2012) - Cherise McEnery's solo home run in the bottom of the fifth broke a 2-2 tie and NJCAA No. 5/FCSAA No. 2 Tallahassee Community College (34-11) hung on for a 3-2 win over Polk State College (24-30) in opening round play at the NJCAA Region 8B/FCSAA Gulf District Softball Tournament on Friday afternoon.
Emily Smethurst allowed three hits and struck out six in the complete-game effort. She had to work around a leadoff single by Michelle Sexton in the seventh to secure the win, which moves Tallahassee into the winner's bracket against NJCAA No. 12/FCSAA No. 4 State College of Florida at 8 p.m. eastern.
Tallahassee broke a scoreless tie in the third when Amanda Ake led off the inning with a solo home run. Later in the inning, Dallas Towns scored from third on Devin Kochergen's infield single.
Polk State got to Smethurst in the fourth and tied the game on one swing - a two-out homer by pitcher Molly Billue.
McEnery's home run, her tenth of the season, came with one out in the fifth.
Billue was the tough-luck loser for Polk State, who falls into the loser's bracket to play Northwest Florida State College at 8 p.m. in an elimination game.
Alexis Anderson went 2-for-4, the only Tallahassee player to record more than one hit.
