Tallahassee, FL -- December 1, 2011 --
Tallahassee Community College softball standout Emily Smethurst has verbally committed to Florida State University.
Smethurst chose the Seminoles from a group of schools that included North Carolina State, Syracuse, University of Texas-El Paso and University of Texas-San Antonio.
Currently a sophomore at TCC, Smethurst, who hails from Brighton East, Victoria, Australia, will anchor the Eagles’ pitching staff in 2012 as the team looks to make a return trip to the NJCAA Tournament.
As a freshman, Smethurst posted a record of 15-9 with a 1.96 ERA and 125 strikeouts in 157.1 innings pitched. Those numbers helped her earn first-team All-Panhandle Conference honors.
The accolades extended into the postseason where Smethurst was named to the FCSAA Gulf District, FCSAA and NJCAA All-Tournament teams.
Her 4-1 postseason record included wins over Polk State College in the NJCAA District H Championship Game and Blinn (Texas) College, which gave the Eagles a third-place finish at the NJCAA Tournament.
With Smethurst’s commitment, three Atlantic Coast Conference schools will have TCC connections beginning next fall – former player Kirsten Grant currently attends North Carolina State and current Eagle Amanda Ake recently announced her decision to attend Virginia Tech.
Smethurst will sign with Florida State in the spring.
