TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (February 7, 2012) – Tallahassee Community College’s Amanda Ake has been named Softball Player of the Week by the Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA).
The award was based on all games played through Sunday, February 5.
Ake, a sophomore from Carrolton, Ga., and the Eagles’ starting shortstop, is off to a torrid start. Through Tallahassee’s first ten games, she is batting .500 (18-for-36) with 14 runs scored, five home runs and 12 RBIs. She also has a .972 slugging percentage.
Ake is coming off a superb weekend at the prestigious Triple Crown College Classic, where Tallahassee was crowned champions after posting a 5-0 record. In five games at the Triple Crown Classic, Ake batted 11-for-18 with four home runs and eight RBIs. She hit a solo home run in Saturday’s victory over nationally-ranked Florida State College at Jacksonville then belted a total of three in Sunday’s games against Aiken (S.C.) Technical College (2) and St. Johns River State College (1).
Ake has hit safely in all ten games, has five multi-hit games, has scored multiple runs in six games and is a perfect 8-for-8 on stolen base attempts.
Ake’s efforts have helped Tallahassee to a 7-3 start and, as of today, a number one ranking in the FCSAA Softball Coaches’ Poll. Tallahassee is also ranked No. 3 in the NJCAA Division I Softball Preseason Poll.
Tallahassee plays its home opener at 4 p.m. Thursday when it hosts St. Johns River State College for a doubleheader.
