Marianna, FL (AP) - A 17-point effort by sophomore guard Carlyle Francis helped FCCAA No. 4 Tallahassee Community College (9-2) to a 78-68 win over the Alabama Southern Community College Eagles on day one at the Panhandle Classic on Friday afternoon.
Francis hit 7-of-12 field goal attempts, including 3-of-4 beyond the arc, in the victory for Tallahassee’s version of the Eagles.
Three other players reached double-figures for Tallahassee – Leek Leek with 15 points, Richard Anderson with 12 and Marterrace Brock with 10.
Rashard McGill scored nine points and pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds for the Eagles.
After winning at Gulf Coast Community College, 84-71, on Thursday evening, Alabama Southern was aiming for its second win in as many days against a Panhandle Conference opponent. Tallahassee, however, did not oblige.
The first half was all Tallahassee, as the Eagles led 36-19, its largest lead of the game, before watching Alabama Southern close the first half on a 15-4 run.
Alabama Southern drew as close as 62-59 in the waning stages of the game before Tallahassee pulled away for the victory.
Tallahassee helped its cause by shooting 25-of-30 from the free throw line, including a 17-of-20 effort in the second half. Leek hit all nine of his free throw attempts while McGill was 9-for-11.
Tallahassee will go for win No. 10 at 5 p.m. Saturday when it plays Santa Fe College at the Panhandle Classic.
