Athens, GA - A trio of Georgia soccer players were named to the 2010 NSCAA/Performance Subaru All-South Region teams, according to a Dec. 2 announcement.
Freshman forward Alexa Newfield was named second team All-Region, while redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Baker and rookie defender Torri Allen both were named to the third team. It is the first regional honor for each.
Newfield – also a first team All-SEC and All-Freshman selection – was tied for the team lead in goals this season with eight, adding four assists for a team-best 20 points. She broke the Georgia single-season record for shots, firing 87 on the year while also leading the team with three game-winning goals.
Baker, a second team All-SEC pick in 2010, led the Southeastern Conference with nine shutouts this past season, stringing together 561 minutes of scoreless soccer during the month of October and allowing only 19 goals all season. Her 0.60 goals-against average in league games was tops in the SEC.
Allen adds the All-Region honor to her resume after garnering an SEC All-Freshman nod for her play on the Georgia back line. Allen helped the Bulldog defense to just a 0.85 goals-against average on the season. She came up with a huge defensive save vs. Kentucky to preserve the Bulldogs’ shutout with just 19 minutes to play, deflecting a ball shot at an empty Georgia net.
Three selections to the All-Region team matches the most in a season for the Bulldogs, tying the 1998, 1999, 2007, and 2009 campaigns. The SEC had 18 players included.
The Bulldogs went 11-6-4 in 2010, reaching the semifinals of the SEC Championships in Orange Beach, Ala.
