Valdosta, GA - In the final day of the NCAA South Regionals, Valdosta State earned a 5-0 victory over West Florida to move to 17-1 on the season. The win secures a spot in the NCAA Men’s Tennis National Tournament for Valdosta State.
Valdosta State and West Florida put on an entertaining round of doubles. Luis Loeffler and Philip Pakebusch earned the most one-sided win with an 8-4 victory over Domenico Sano and Sean Gunnels. After that, it was neck and neck at first and third doubles.
Konstantin Kutschenko and Bernhard Wallner dueled to an 8-8 tie with Jose Carlos Tolentin and Mike Lue. Kutschenko and Wallner pulled it together to win the tiebreaker, 7-4, and earn VSU’s second point of the match.
At the top doubles, Daniel Dueren and Christian Hunter jumped out to a strong lead in the early going. Dueren and Hunter had command of the match with a 7-4 lead, but Leandro Ferreira and Andrey Pozhidaev stormed back to tie the match, 7-7. Dueren and Hunter, however, outlasted Ferreira and Pozhidaev in the final set to emerge victorious, 9-7, and help VSU claim a 3-0 lead after doubles play.
With three points in the bag, VSU only needed two points out of six in singles play. Loeffler was the first to comply with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Lue.
Mere minutes later, Dueren secured the match and Valdosta State’s trip to the NCAA Men’s Tennis National Tournament with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Pozhidaev.
