Florence, AL - After dropping two sets to North Alabama, Valdosta State battled back to win sets three and four to force a fifth set. The Blazers, however, could not keep momentum going and dropped the fifth set to fall, 3-2 (25-19, 25-18, 20-25, 20-25, 15-11). The loss drops VSU to 14-15 overall and 4-7 in the Gulf South Conference.
After hitting .167 in the first set and .094 in the second, the Blazers struck 11 kills in the third set and 13 in the fourth to mount a comeback. Valdosta State hit an impressive .414 attacking percentage in the fourth set.
Leading the Blazers in kills was Chelsea Logan with 13. Katie Onushko added 11 while Tania Tauiliili contributed nine kills with a team high .286 attacking percentage. Ashley Lala gave out 38 assists while Onushko and Krista Bradford combined for 25 digs.
Valdosta State outblocked North Alabama, 8-6. Destiny Berry led the team’s effort at the net with three block assists and a solo block. Onushko and Logan each added a solo and an assist while Tauiliili and Brittany Smith added two block assists each.
Four Lions reached double figure kills, led by Natalie Marsh with 19 kills. Hope Rayburn gave out 61 assists while Lauren Greenhill led the team in digs with 24. Two others had double-digit digs.
The Blazers will look to bounce back against Christian Brothers at 2 p.m. Saturday.
